Five benefits of production engineering job

In this article, I'm going to talk about "five benefits of production engineering job". After more than 10 years of working experience in production engineering, here are the benefits I've seen. If you are interested in becoming a production engineering professional, please take a look at them.

Benefit 1) You can experience the fun of manufacturing

Whether it's a manufacturing product or a piece of art such as music or movie, creating something gives you a great deal of joy and a sense of achievement. You can feel a sense of achievement when you install the equipment and make the products with that equipment.

I personally was the type of person who liked to make something. It was a long time ago, but when I was looking for a job, one of my criteria was to be able to work in the field. I didn't really want to work at a desk or do much interpersonal interaction, such as negotiating or customer service, so production engineering job was a good fit for me.

However, there is some paperwork in production engineering as well. Nevertheless, there is no such thing as working on a computer all day long, and if you are tired of working on a computer, you can go to the field. You are also free to change your mind by going around.

Benefit 2) You get a sense of achievement with your improvement

When you solve a problem, the effects of improvement are immediately apparent. If you improve quality problems and productivity on the shop floor, you will see immediate results in production numbers and defect rates.

When you work for a large company, it is often difficult to realize the results of your work and feel motivated because you don't know why you are doing it. The larger the company, the harder it is to see the purpose and effectiveness of work. When you start to question whether your work is meaningful, your motivation for your work drops significantly and personal growth stops.

In that sense, you can remain highly motivated for a job in production engineering, where you can easily see the effects of improvement, depending on the results. On the other hand, if you don't perform well, it may put a lot of pressure on you, so it's up to individual effort and team activity.

Benefit 3) You can understand the internal structure of equipment and products

As you learn more about our equipment and products, you'll understand the inner structure and control mechanisms. This is a concept that can be adapted to everyday life. You'll get perspective on the inner structure of appliances and industrial equipment and how they are controlled.

If it's good technology, you'll be even more interested in it, or you'll be curious about the structure. When it comes to mechanical, electrical and software, the basic concepts are the same for all products and equipment. Once you become an engineer and build up your skills, you will see a new world.

Benefit 4) You can invest big money

One of production engineering jobs is to install new production lines.
When it comes to capital investment in the preparation of a new production line, millions of dollars are required. It's a lot of pressure but rewarding to be in a leadership position and manage a budget of this size on your own.

We can't afford to fail, so we have to make a careful decision based on the amount of investment and the appropriateness of the equipment specifications. Dealing with amounts of money that you can't spend on a personal life will allow you to practice a great sense of responsibility and company management mindset.

Benefit 5) You have no trouble changing jobs

As mentioned in another article, the concept of production engineering is roughly the same everywhere, even if the products and production processes are different. If you have the skills, you can work for any company. There were many people around me who changed jobs. Even when I joined the company, I was told that "if you are a production engineer for 10 years, you would have no trouble getting a job".
More than 10 years after those days, my opinion is as follows.

"If you have more than five years of experience and great achievements, you can go anywhere. If you've only spent 10 years, there's no guarantee."

It's true that in the job market over the past three years or so, there has been a growing demand for engineers. If you take your work seriously, improve yourself, and are blessed with opportunities for growth, you can build up your achievements as an engineer and become a person who can work anywhere.

Disadvantage 1) The public holidays could be squashed

The following are three disadvantages of production engineering.
The job of production engineering is to install and improve production lines. Major modifications to equipment can only be made when the equipment is not operating. If you can systematically stop production, you can modify your equipment even on weekdays. However, if production is so busy that there is no time to spare, the equipment is available only during the holidays.

Therefore, you may have to work when the rest of the world is on vacation. For the first three years or so of my employment, I used to plan trips and other things for major holidays. Gradually, my job prospects were unclear until right before the holidays, so from my late 20s , I always decided to plan the holidays right before the holidays.

Disadvantage 2) You won't feel comfortable as long as the production line is running

This is when production started on 24-hour basis. As production shifts increase, you may be called to work even after you go home. There are certain problems that only certain people can handle, so the more technical skills you develop, the more likely you are to be called to the night shift.

There were times when I was purposely working night shifts because the night shift support was so thin. Then, in turn, the daytime shift became so weak that I was sometimes called to work during the day.

Disadvantage 3) The work isn't done until the problem is resolved

This is also a support for production line. If a problem occurs and production stops, it is a big loss for the company. Therefore, it should be recovered within a few hours. It's a harsh reality of working in manufacturing. Just because it's time to go home doesn't mean you can go home. If a problem arises just before you plan to go home, you'll have to work late that day.
